Once acclimatised you’ll be ready to embark on a short 3 day trek of the Lares Valley.

Nestled in the Sacred Valley, the Lares Valley gives you a beautiful and cultural experience of life in the Andes. Traditions and ways of life exist from many centuries ago, the inhabitants of this valley always provide a warm welcome for visitors; making this a really special place to spend your time trekking.

Starting at Huaran in the Lares Valley you’ll pitstop for lunch after a fairly long drive from Cusco in the morning. After lunch you follow a trail for about 4 hrs to the first campsite of Cuncani. Day 2 you’ll trek from Cuncani through to Huacahuasi, encountering local farmsteads and communities along the way.

The third day beginning from Huacahuasi you’ll head deeper into the valleys of this area and experience more traditional quechuan farm practices, whilst also scaling a 4,800m mountain pass. On the descent you’ll pass a mountain lake in Ipsaycocha & descend down to the town of Patacchanta for a final lunch; capping a great couple of days before the journey back through to Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

Then the climax to your trip – Peru Amazon Tours; travelling to Tambopata National Reserve offers a unique opportunity to discover a lively biodiversity of birds, mammals, reptiles and trees. Record-setting numbers of animal species are concentrated within small areas; and the variety of plant life is greater than almost anywhere in the world. To help you experience the wonder of this magic place, we have prepared a programmed itinerary for your stay at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion.

On you last day you’ll head back to Puerto Maldonado for your connecting flight out to Lima.

Day 1
Cusco - Sacsayhuaman - Ollantaytambo
We start by collecting you from the airport or your hotel and driving straight to the impressive archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, which translates as the 'sacred falcon' and was thought to guard the city of Cusco. Walking around the site to understand the importance of it to Cusco & its people, we will take our time before moving on for a great picnic. This will feature local food native to the area, which is organic and unique, and not available in other parts of Peru. A really delicious lunch option. In the afternoon we'll arrive into Ollantaytambo, a beautiful town in the heart of the Valley, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy your surroundings before the next few days.
  • Hotel Recommendation: El Albergue
  • Meals included: Lunch
Day 2
Ollantaytambo Ruins & Yucay Day Hike
After an early breakfast, you can walk around the Inca Fortress and ceremonial site of Ollantaytambo, marvelling at these extraordinarily well-preserved ruins. Set around a tranquil plaza, renowned for its peaceful charm. The little altered layout of the town offers an unprecedented peek into the way of life of its past peoples, the Incas. Even the street names are original from ancient times. Late morning you can head to the temple of Sayri Tupac. At one time in history, Yucay was the resting place for the royal Inca family. The trail follows a wide channel stream coming from the snowcapped mountain of San Juan. Immersed in nature, with the sound of running water and the views of the valley from the top of the terraces will be one of the highlights of our journey. After about 2 hours the trail finishes at the other plaza of Yucay. From here you can take a combi bus to head back to Ollantaytambo.
  • Hotel Recommendation: El Albergue
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
Day 3
Lares Valley Trek: Cusco - Lares - Cuncani - D1
Very early, as the sun begins to shine on the roofs Cusco, our guide will pick us up from the hotel and we will head in the direction of the Sacred Valley. The Calca market will be our last stop before losing contact with big cities. This is our final chance to buy any last minute things we may need for the trip. The road that leads to Lares and crosses the Amparaes pass at 4470m is a phenomenal drive which winds through arid landscapes, occasional rivers run across the road and the mountain views are breathtaking. Our final destination is the hot baths of Lares. Here, naturally occurring, relaxing thermal waters await us before our trek. From the thermal baths unfolds a small track, used by local children and community members. We pass through hand tilled fields and crops of quinoa and potato, amongst quaint stone houses. After a gradual climb of a few hours we will stop for a delicious lunch, before continuing on to the community of Cuncani, our camp for the evening. The night will be cold but charming.
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4
Lares Valley Trek: Cuncani - Paso de Pumahuanca Paccha - D2
If the day is clear, we will wake up to the imposing view of Colque Cruz, a majestic mountain capped by a glacier, which provides water to the community. We follow the path next to an icy stream that will take us towards the pass. The ascent is challenging. We will have some hours of demanding but rewarding uphill, on rocky trails passing through incredible landscapes punctuated by high altitude lagoons. As we get closer to the pass, the trail becomes steeper and rockier. On reaching the summit a stunning view of the Pampas of Anta awaits us, followed by a descent that will be most agreeable after such a long climb. The descent is steep but beautiful, crossing a small forest of ‘Polylepis’, the endemic and endangered trees of the high Andes. Just after the forest and with an incredible view of the valley below we will stop for lunch. After which the drop continues until we reach our camp, a tranquil paradise, surrounded by trees and crossed by a small river. Tonight, if we find some dead wood, we will enjoy a campfire.
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5
Lares Valley Trek: Paccha - Piscigranja - Ollantaytambo - D3
This morning will be our last on the trail and after breakfast, there will be a chance to take photos with our porters, cooks and field staff. All those who made this trip possible. From here the walk becomes easier down to the piscigranja (fish farm). We will feel the climate changing, becoming warmer and more alive, with more variety in vegetation as hummingbirds accompany us on our journey. After a few short hours, we will meet the private transportation that will take us to Ollantaytambo station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. As the train travels along, the valley turns into a canyon and the scenery alters, as the cloud forests begin to appear, on our approach to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. We will disembark the train at Aguas Calientes. Hotel staff will be waiting to help us with our luggage and escort us to the hotel. After a well-deserved shower, we will enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the best restaurants in town.

There will be a pre-trek briefing held usually the evening before departure, at your hotel, to go over the details of the trek and any specific requirements not already captured
Prior to setting off we recommend you steer clear of street food and only eat in good restaurants, to avoid any stomach complaints. Peruvian food can be spicy, it can be strong and rich for many European diets. Likewise with tap water, it is largely untreated, so please avoid at all costs on arrival and stick to bottled water only or sterilised water if you have the right equipment.
We’ll ensure that we cater for all of your dietary needs, at the point of booking we’ll collect this information from you. We can secure special menu requests also for your tour party.
We are able to customise our treks to suit you, but usually our treks are guided by a professional bilingual guide, arriero (horseman) and mules to carry all equipment (passenger horses also available on request), and a mountain cook. They become a large part of your trekking expedition and it’s a great experience working together.
This is a really important part of your trip planning process, please find a link below which explains a little more about preparing for altitude.
Attached below are a couple of links which will explain how to prepare for your trip & trek in advance of your arrival. We recommend being prepared in advance to save time & stress whilst you’re in Peru.
From June through to the end of September, we’re offering one person free on all of our treks for group sizes of 3+. If you are a group of 2 you can add one person for free, or if you’re a group of 3 the third person joins free and so on.
